TORONTO (July 17, 2018) — Kia Canada Inc. (KCI), PGA TOUR golfer and Kia ambassador David Hearn announced today the two winners of the 2018 The David Hearn Foundation Kia Grant are Brooke Frerichs (13 years old) from Calgary, AB and Sam Kimball (18 years old) from Lahave, NS.
The Grant was launched in 2017 as a joint initiative between KCI and Hearn to encourage and enable junior golfers across Canada to give back to their communities by recognizing their local Alzheimer Society organization. Both Frerichs and Kimball will be awarded with $4,500 to direct to their respective organizations to assist with the implementation of programs and services.
Frerichs, a junior golfer at Glencoe Golf & Country Club, and Kimball of Osprey Ridge Golf Course, will both be brought in to take part in The David Hearn Foundation Charity Classic at Brantford Golf & Country Club on Monday, July 30, 2018 and will be formally recognized by Hearn and KCI executives during the event’s evening reception.
While there were a number of incredible applications for the second year of The David Hearn Foundation Kia Grant, The David Hearn Foundation committee believed both Frerichs and Kimball’s applications showed a strong commitment to community, a passionate involvement in junior golf, well-roundedness, and a thorough understanding and dedication to their respective Alzheimer Society organizations.
“Brooke and Sam demonstrate all that the sport has to offer,” said Hearn. “Both young golfers show incredible promise on and off the course. I look forward to meeting Brooke and Sam later this month, and watching as they continue to have a positive impact in golf and in their communities for years to come.”
Hearn, a spokesperson for the Alzheimer Society of Canada, is an advocate against the disease, stemming from his own personal connections to Alzheimer’s through his grandmother and great-grandmother. After being involved with his local chapter since 2011 – the Alzheimer Society of Brant, Haldimand Norfolk, Hamilton, and Halton, Hearn launched his foundation in 2015. The mission of the foundation is to support the Alzheimer Society of Canada at a national level, while also still raising funds for his local chapter to implement programs and services for families and individuals suffering from the disease in his hometown.
“Kia Canada is proud to work with David Hearn and The David Hearn Foundation to recognize young Canadians who go above and beyond in their efforts at improving the communities we all live in,” said Ted Lancaster, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Kia Canada Inc. “Creating a better Canada starts with the youth of this country and these young golfers should all be very proud of the work they put in, both on the course and in their local neighbourhoods.”
